More Proof Google Might be Evil

It seems Google will likely get dinged for trespassing, as the US appeals Court allows this claim to move forward.

A couple called the Boring’s (yes, that’s their their real surname) sued Google in early 2008 for taking pictures of its suburban Pennsylvania home. The claim was their house was on a clearly marked private road (“Private Road, No Trespassing”) and Google’s Street View mobile trespassed by entering and taking the images of their home. There was also an “invasion of privacy” claim, among several others including “punitive damages.”

The US District Court dismissed the entire case.  The US Court of Appeal for the Third District affirmed the lower court’s ruling on all claims and causes of action except the trespass claim:

We will affirm the District Court’s grant of Google’s motion to dismiss the Borings’ claims for invasion of privacy, unjust enrichment, injunctive relief, and punitive damages.  We reverse, however, with respect to the trespass claim, and remand with instructions that the District Court permit that claim to go forward.

So it will be interesting to see if the jury sees Google as evil and makes these folks rich, but it is doubtful!

So everyone can probably agree that Lady Gaga is overplayed but she still sounds pretty good?  Or should I say, ‘he’ sounds pretty good.  It seems that most searchers think that Lady Gaga should be renamed Lad Gaga!

Thinking of Having Kids - Better Search Google First

December 3, 2009

As a parent for the past 13 years I can unequivocally state that children are truly a blessing but on the flip side being a parent can be extremely challenging!  But judging by the Google search recommendations you should probably think twice (or more) before having those little bundles of joy!

google says no kids

There are some folks that just love animals and treat them just like their kids.  I personally am a cat lover so I was a little shocked to see these results on Google

How Much Email Space do you Need?

I was looking through the back-end of my Google gmail account today and was a little shocked to see them offering me some serious amounts of storage.  For the life of me I can’t figure out what someone could possibly use it for but maybe I am just missing out on something?  Ah,  now I see that it also counts towards Picasa Web Albums but still 16 terabytes of data?  $4,096.00 a year?

Let’s hear what you would use your 16TB’s of storage for?  And will the often rumored about, mythical G-Drive be available soon?

Google storage is shared between Gmail and Picasa Web Albums. You get extra space in both services, in addition to your current free quota.

Brutal Honesty, Does it Work

I have recently exchanged a dozen or so emails with a potential client and the crux of our conversation has been her asking what she needs to do SEO-wise to help her brand new site rank high so she can bring in new clients (she is a real estate agent) and I am trying to tell her in ‘as nice a way’ as possible that her website is horrible and no matter how much SEO we did and no matter how high she ranked her chances of getting conversions were extremely low.

Finally I decided to lay-it-on-the-line because I could no longer think of any ‘nice’ ways to convince her that a site redesign was really imperative - so I broke out the truth stick!

I just spent 2 months designing this site

To put it bluntly I guess that is why you are a real estate agent and not a web designer, but fret not because I could not do much better. We should all stick to what we are good at and pay the pros to do what we don’t understand. When I have plumbing problems I call a plumber. I could go to Home Depot and talk with them for 2 hours and then buy all the parts and try and fix it myself but more than likely I will make it worse. So instead of spending lots of my own time and money on something I don’t know how to do I call my plumber and pay him $65 an hour to fix my problems quickly and correctly. It really is the same with SEO (or web design), you can spend 100’s of hours learning SEO strategies of your own and then go out and give it your best try but you might just get your site banned from the search engines and then all the time would have been wasted.

Did I go too far, will she be angry or shocked into facing the truth. I don’t feel I crossed the line, just came close to it. What do you think?

For those of you new to the SEO world you can rest assured that if the sky has not fallen yet - it soon will, any second, maybe…this same drum has been beating for the past 5 years and every few months a new SEO Prophet has some newfangled reason for it to be the truth, THIS TIME!

Here is a posting from a forum on Feb. 2006

Is SEO dead?

I’ve heard many people that says SEO people usually make the site worser for google than it was before.  Is that true?

And another one from Sept. 2008

Is SEO dead?

I posted this another forum but wanted to get feedback from everyone here as well about a blog post I made this morning.

And now Justin Harrison is touting the same brimstone and hellfire silliness.  Here is a quote from his blog:
In fact my own research shows that 92% of all top ranked websites sites sampled are not only at risk, but have a 85% chance of completely loosing their rankings.

I hate to break the news to Justin but if the above really happens then Google will pretty much become irrelevant.  I am guessing he came to this conclusion based on something to do with folks breaking some or all of Googles rules but if they simply get rid of all their top ranking listings or even 50% of them, the result will be terrible.

Here is a bit of my expert research, getting rid of the top 10 or so results for some keywords and let’s see what is left:

Interestingly enough if we get rid of the first 12 results for the term ‘SEO is Dead’ we end up with what you see below…now I get it.  Good job Justin.

High Quality Advertising - NOT!

So I have been looking around to buy some good quality advertising spots to promote this blog and here is an example of what someone was trying to sell me.

“high quality SEO blog”

and his private message to me:

“This is a very exclusive deal and only you and one or two more person will be getting it. The blog is total quality and I am sure you too are aware that its impossible to find good seo ads.  The ad from the blog may also give you natural traffic”

and now for the pay-off pitch, here is an exerpt from the first blog post I read on this ‘high’ quality SEO blog:

This is my first post in last 10 days and I felt to write it to tell current subscribers and readers why I am writing so less on the blog.

“The reason is, this blog was started as a blog which can share my SEO knowledge with others as well as to establish nBridges Media as SEO Brand. Now I did got decent success in both but the growth was very slow and because I wasn’t make any money from this blog, it don’t make any sense to spend hours writing content for it. I can ofcourse spend more effort into the site now and make it a premium SEO blog as I have already done the hard work but I feels somehow it don’t align with what I am doing currently and planning to do next in coming 6 months.”

All I can say to this is WoW!
